Amsterdam Sinfonietta
"His Chopin sounds like a language of its own - universally understandable and individually touching: Bruce Liu is currently one of the best interpreters of the subtle composer. Mandarin, French, English? For Liu, it's just a question of the other person, as the Paris-born Canadian with Chinese roots is equally fluent in all three languages.
However, his best means of expression is undoubtedly music: since winning first place at the 18th International Chopin Competition in 2021, the young pianist has met with enthusiastic audiences worldwide. Now also in Innsbruck, where he will perform the French composer's much-loved and often-heard 2nd Piano Concerto with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta led by Candida Thompson.
This ideal example of a virtuoso concerto will be framed by Mieczysław Weinberg's “Aria” composed in 1942 - which a biographer of the Russian composer of Jewish-Polish origin described as “the beautiful Slavic cousin” of Gabriel Fauré's song “Après un rêve” - and by Tchaikovsky's well-known “Souvenir de Florence” op. 70. 70, orchestrated for a sextet of two violins, violas and cellos, the composer is said to have struggled with the feeling that he was actually writing it for orchestra throughout the entire compositional process. This in turn led some orchestras to decide to perform the work with a choral string section."
