Come, sweet death
Hugo Distler - Dance of Death
and works by A. Bruckner,
K. Nystedt, J. Brahms and others.

"Come, sweet death. Come, blessed peace. Come, lead me to peace." Anyone who asks death to do this is "tired of the world".
So it says in the hymnal that Schemelli published in 1736 and Bach supervised musically. For the righteous, it is a path to life, "and his steps do not falter" (Bruckner: Os justi).

But for very few, death is a safe bank. And so they stagger, from the emperor to the child, when the
Reaper calls them to their last dance. Many have been touched and artistically inspired by this theme, the great
Johannes Brahms and also the young Hugo Distler. His motet for the Sunday of the Dead is at the center of this
of this a cappella evening.
