The term “Kumbhaka” derives from yoga practice and translates as holding the breath – a pause between inhaling and exhaling that is natural and affects our breathing rate. Cultivating this pause makes it possible to perceive the stagnation in a movement and to generate new strength from it for the further course of breathing. Stagnation as growth and retreat: a comparison with Stützer-Tóthová‘s artistic practice, in which, after initial dissonance, her own role as a mother became an additional facet of her being an artist. A role in which she struggles on multiple levels for visibility and needs-orientation, for necessity and justification. The Spirit of Kumbhaka is part of the annual programme The Resistance of Nothingness curated by Bettina Siegele.
