by Laura Naumann ‘Something has come to an end. The ashes still swirl through the air, smoke rises from the piles of rubble.
In the transit room, before the present takes shape and the future begins, the past is laid to rest.
‘Everything must burn’, Rosa said, and the world has gone up in flames as if it had been waiting for it.’ Naumann's rhythmic, urgent text follows five characters in the run-up to destruction. They are not looking for revolution, they are searching. How can one act correctly, live correctly in a thicket of constraints and circumstances? Rosa appears on their horizon like a fixed point, her messages spread via news snippets and YouTube recordings, are linked, shared and commented on. At last there is someone who is taking a stand and showing the way. At first, everything seems logical and feasible, small steps towards change and a better world. But then an attack happens, the fronts become unclear, anger rises. The world is set on fire almost tenderly, as if it could be set to zero and the future could rise from the ashes. Oscillating between utopia and dystopia, The Ugly Universe is a text about a very contemporary attitude to life and the question of whether a new beginning is possible.
